Adaptive Sound Environments - Interaction Design for Conscious and Subconscious Behaviors

A wide range of innovative novel controllers have been developed for novices interacting with sound environments, developers in this field target different user groups to explore and perform with these new interfaces, however it is difficult to evaluate new designs due to a lack of common standards within the field. This talk identifies an evaluative framework of relevant terms from the current literature and considers associated works designed for collaborative interaction. Strategies for motivating new behaviours in participants are presented in context, using results from a recent pilot study. This research proposes that new meaningful musical interactions can be mediated within an adaptive environment by observing individual and collaborative behaviours through gesture capture, motion tracking and response to motivational triggers.
