Generating new musical styles in a society of software agents:

In our research, the evolution of musical style is analyzed under the perspective of musical influences. We developed a system to simulate the emergence of particular musical world views. Software Agents extract a number of musical features from different sets of music material during learning and compositional activities. The dynamics of their style evolution is observed through the analysis of the relative importance of the different musical structures (musical ‘memes’) to which they were exposed during their careers. Specific influence routes can be designed to replicate possible connections amongst different styles. The system is also used as a platform for interaction between human and artificial musicians in a real performance setting.
